The topo of Brantrake Lower Crag, Page 29 of Eskdale guide, is poor, inaccurate & incomplete. Poor as the crag is moving into shadow, inaccurate as The Crack takes the line of Catkin, 4 Catkin HVS 5a. The Crack is better illustrated on Page 154 of Lake District Rock guide. Incomplete as the lines of both Catkin & Cat’s out the Bag are omitted, previously submitted but deleted from Latest New Routes. The line of Cats Eye/Linbeck Crack took several hours of cleaning & showed no sign of a previous ascent. A route comment was made on Cats Eye as to being Linbeck Crack & a link provided, which proved unable to be downloaded & nothing noted in the archives, now deleted, as are the entries to Latest New Routes, a very common practice in the post Covid era. Further no entry of Linbeck Crack noted in the previous 1996 edition of Scafell, Wasdale & Eskdale Guide Page 326 though The Mantleshelves is recorded in the supposedly same year. Those wishing an improved topo & descriptions of the omitted routes, try U K Climbing. Dick Baker
Nice rant Dickie.
Get a life.
I was equally confused when I bought the new guide book.
I climbed both Catkin and Cat’s out the Bag using the FRCC PDF download last year. They were both great routes. (Luckily I kept a copy of the PDF download)
